Migration of Monarch Butterflies

A kind friend from New York City mailed us a package full of information for tagging migrating Monarch butterflies.

We were curious about their migration so we read a few books and found out that in October, when the cold air begins to blow, the Monarch butterflies leave Canada and travel all the way to Mexico. Our area of Pennsylvania is along one of their migration routes.

We made a map of their path and we also made tiny paper models of Monarch butterflies that we will hang on a branch to represent their arrival at the fir trees in Mexico.

Please remember to keep a watch for any traveling Monarchs. If you see one, please gently catch it in a net, place it in a jar with a slice of orange and bring it to school as soon as possible. We will then attach the sticky tag to its underside and release it so that it may continue its migration south.

A very special Thank You to Katie N's Aunt Ellen for thinking of us here at Datzyk Montessori School.

Fire Safety Week

Today, for fire safety week, some Cetronia firefighters visited the school. Here is one of them all dressed up to go into a burning building! The firefighters were late today because they arrived just after fighting a local fire.

Then, towards the end of their presentation, they were called away to fight another fire!

We learned a lot about fire safety today, and had a lot of fun seeing what firefighters do on the job.

Teamwork

Last week, the five year olds spotted a beautiful hawk in the park and it really piqued an interest in birds.

Miss Davis has been talking about local species, and the students have been watching for visitors at the bird feeders and learning the parts of a bird. These three girls demonstrated great teamwork by completing this huge puzzle. They were very proud and excited!

Squirrel Art

The 5 year olds have been busy learning all kinds of new things. This week they began talking about squirrels - the foods they eat, how and where they live, and their habits.

They have now taken their science lesson to an artistic level! Here is a picture of one of the girls working on a squirrel art project that uses a real peanut shell. For a valuable practical life lesson, the children shelled the peanuts on their own.
